Ariel is a fictional character and the main protagonist of Walt Disney Pictures' 28th animated feature, *The Little Mermaid* (1989). She also features in the film’s prequel television series (1992–1994), the direct-to-video sequel *The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea* (2000), and the prequel *The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning* (2008). Voiced by Jodi Benson in all official animated appearances and related merchandise, Ariel holds the distinction of being the fourth Disney Princess. She is notable for being the first nonhuman princess and the only Disney princess to become a mother to her own child.
